Family Learning Week
This week, we invited parents into the classroom to participate in a variety of STEM activities related to our learning about sound in Science.
On the first day, we explored sound by constructing our own amplifiers. The children were given a range of materials but no further instruction. They had to explore and use their scientific knowledge to support them in this task. After 20 minutes, they swapped creations and reviewed, amended and improved their new amplifier.
The second day, we spoke about the need for ear protection and why people may need to muffle or reduce sound. The children were then given a range of materials and asked to construct ear protectors.
On the final day, we experimented with sound waves using spoons. Using a string, they had to create a loop in the middle and insert the handle of the spoon. Then, they had to take each string and wrap them around their index finger on each hand. Following this, they pushed the string against each ear. Next, a friend used a ruler to tap the spoon sending the sound waves to their ears. They experimented with different sizes spoons, different lengths of string, and a fork. At the end, they reported their findings to the class.

Thank you to all the parents who joined us. We hope you had a wonderful and insightful time.
