Family Learning in Nursery
This week we welcomed families into our classroom to join in with some STEM activities. We measured paper and cut it into three parts, securing with a paperclip to make a paper spinner. Children then tested them out on the Piazza and had fun watching them twist and twirl to the ground. “I’ve made a ballerina!” commented one child.
We engaged in some open-ended investigation using magnets to find out what was magnetic and non-magnetic in the classroom. We also challenged the children to pick up as many paperclips, split pins and treasury tags as possible using their magnet. We even discovered some magic – moving a paperclip across a piece of card without touching it (using the magnet underneath, shhh!).
We made gloop using cornflower and water to investigate how materials can change state from solid to liquid. Children really engaged actively with this activity, mixing the ingredients, watching the gloop drip from their fingers. Children commented “it feels soft”, “it is smooth”, “it’s drippy!” and then painting the sides of the tray to watch it dry - “it’s gone all crusty now!”.
Thank you so much to all the families that were able to join us. We hope you had a worthwhile experience with your child and enjoyed seeing Nursery-style STEM in action!
