Getting to know God

Year 5's first R.E. topic of the term was - What is God like?

We have spent a long time considering what the Bible tells us about the nature of God and learnt about how his nature is a combination of both loving and holy characteristics.

We wrote a call and response poems to describe our view of the nature of God. We also created pieces of art work to express our ideas.

Finally, we had a philosophical discussion around the question - Is it better for our world to have loving or a holy God?

Here are some of our ideas.

Reasons for God being holy

  • If the people in the world are not controlled strictly, with clear rules, the world would become chaos.
  • You tend to follow rules if there are consequences to your actions. You don't if you are forgiven all the time.
  • God's power and holiness has made a beautiful world for us to live in.
  • If you follow God's rules, people are still unique and interesting.
  • A holy God, still teaches you how to behave. They are pure and show you how to be good and they give you clear rules.

Reasons for God being loving

  • If you don't have the opportunity to be forgiven, you do one thing wrong and you have to live with the shame for the rest of your life.
  • If God models how to be loving, we will become loving and wars will end.
  • It is not realistic to ask use to be like a pure God with no faults. We are going to fail.
  • You improve if you are taught how to do things in a more loving way.
  • If our world is too strict, we are likely to rebel.
