Learning about Antarctica

We were delighted to welcome Susi Grant, a marine biologist, to Year 1 this week. She very generously offered to visit us to tell us what it is like to live and work in Antarctica. 

Susie's work involves investigating marine life at the bottom of the sea. This means drilling holes through 3m deep ice in order to sink a camera down to the seabed.

We saw several images capturing fascinating examples of sea life and were surprised to find out that there is coral underneath all of that ice. Also, even though air temperatures are very cold, minus 20º degrees when Susie was there, the temperature of the water is around 1º, so relatively 'warm'.

Year 1 asked many interesting questions and then had the opportunity to try on the clothes needed to survive in the coldest and windiest place on Earth. It was great fun. Many thanks to Mrs Lonnon who helped us find Susie!
