Paper birds challenge in Science Week

The school challenge for Science Week this year was to create a paper bird using only A4 paper and scissors, which was quite a challenge for the adults in Year 1, never mind the children!

We spent some time researching different birds, focusing on body shapes and wing types. We also though about different ways of joining paper without being able to use glue or sticky tape.

Finally we set to work. Within a very short time, Year 1 pupils had begun to fashion paper shapes which were very recognisably birds. We worked creatively to decide how to attach wings to bodies and how to keep the birds upright. Much  use was made of folded paper for effective tails and wings.

The final creations were a real credit to the patience, originality and perseverance of all of Year 1 - well done!
