Science in Year 1 - Materials

Year 1 were delighted that so many relatives were able to come and work with them during Family Learning Week.

The session on magnets was very popular and it was quite hard to wrestle the magnets away at the end of the session. Year 1 were very quick to notice that metals often attract magnets. There were a few confusing things though - why were some coins magnetic and some not, for example. 

We were also surprised that taps were not magnetic and neither were most hinges. Year 1 decided that many metals are magnetic but definitely not all.
