Our Grandpas' old toys

We have been so lucky in year one to have had three grandparents visit us to share their childhood toy.  We have learned about how these toys were a great source of entertainment for the grandparents when they were children and they played with their special toys for hours on end.  It was lovely to hear personal stories about how the toy came into their lives and how they were saved from damage.  The children posed some good questions showing their growing enquiry skills as historians.  The children got to handle a very old bear called Nelson, a metal truck and a wooden garage complete with metal cars.  The children noted that the toys had some signs of wear and tear (the bear's ear had been munched on by some moths!) but that they were amazingly well preserved.  The children were able to create a timeline showing the age of the toys and also placed their own childhood toy on the same timeline.  The class had lots of ideas about how they would preserve their special toy for posterity.
