Strange things in the garden...

With all the rain we have had recently, there has been an explosion of growth in the garden. I was outside recently, marvelling at Spring, when I came across these strange little things.

Do you know what they are? Here are a few clues: the buds will unravel and grow to more than a metre long; this plant originally came from a country on the other side of the world; the buds are at the top of a trunk; the trunk grows only 1-2 cm per year!
