Sundials

In year 5, we have been learning about how we get day and night. We made sundials to develop our learning.

We began by making the gnomon by cutting out two triangles of card and sticking them together. We bent their ends and stuck them about 1cm away from the edge of an A3 piece of paper. We decided which end of the tringle needed to face south and which north and marked this on our board. We used our compass skills to find out which way was north and with way was south when we went into the playground.

We took readings at 10.00am, 2.00pm and 3.00pm. Our readings showed that the sun appeared to rise in the East and move around to the west. Therefore the Earth must be turning on its own axis in an anti-clockwise direction.
