The Hobbit
Year 5 have started putting their reading of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit into plans for their own adventure stories. The children have drawn maps of their imaginary worlds onto coffee stained paper and then described some of the locations. Some of the children offered sentences to the class which they wanted some feedback on to help them edit to make improvements. Here is a sentence Sasha was very proud of after the class made suggestions to help her edit it; 'The silent waterfall, which was calmly splashing about, slowly steadied.'
After thinking about the setting for their story, the children planned a main character by thinking about what their character is proud of, what they are afraid of and how they would describe themselves.
