Travelling back to the Stone Age

Year 3 are currently learning about what life was like for Ancient Britons. To support our learning we travelled back into the Stone Age at a place near Hertford called Celtic Harmony. We were ably led by Grizelda who told us she was from the Iron Age, but she was extremely knowledgeable about the Stone Age.

We learned about the many skills the Stone Age people needed to master to be able to survive, including making arrowheads and spearheads from flint stones. Grizelda explained that these would have been used to hunt animals for meat, to skin them and to cut up food. We also spent some time 'forraging' for plants, herbs and vegetables such as mushrooms in order to understand how Ancient Britons found enough food to survive. We watched Bron show us Stone Age people might have started fires in order to keep warm and cook food. And we tried our hand at building shelters using trees, branches and leaves and grass.

At the end of the day we returned to school very impressed by the skills Stone Age people developed to survive and thrive.
