Who was James 'Scotty' Paton?

This term, during our English lessons, we have been learning about the Endurance Expedition carried out by Shackleton and his crew. 

Little did we know, that a member of our class was a descendant of  sea faring explorer who was a member of the crew of Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. James Paton, known as Scotty, was a boatswain. Our class members  grandmother has carried out a lot research into his life and we were very lucky to have her come and talk to us on Friday. 

The class posed a range of very well thought out questions and learnt a lot about what life must have have been like and the motivation of crew members to take part in such expeditions.
