Why do artists use the light and dark in paintings?

This week the children have practiced creating depth in their sketched and paintings. They explored how to create different tints, shades and tones by mixing appropriate colours. In sketching spheres, the children looked carefully at where the shadow is created by shining a torch on the tennis ball. 

The effects were fantastic - very realistic, three dimensional apples and spheres!
